Fair Share of Paper Pledge

I pledge to avoid wasting paper in order to help share access to a limited resource. I want to help to reduce the dramatically increasing paper consumption in the rich world which is connected, though irresponsible production, to threats to biodiversity, human rights abuses, land rights struggles, pollution and climate change. By reducing my paper use I will give developing countries fairer access to paper and its benefits for cultural development, literacy and education. I believe that my quality of life will not suffer if I use less paper. By doing so I will save money and create less waste.

To cut my paper consumption I pledge to take the following specific action:

I will sign off junk mail. Saves 10 Kg!
I will mail back advertising catalogues. Saves 5 Kg!
I will carry a cotton handkerchief instead of using tissues. Saves 3.5 Kg!
I will wipe up with washable cloths instead of using kitchen towels. Saves 7 Kg!
I will refuse packaging at supermarkets. Saves 24 Kg!
I will stop picking up leaflets, fliers and other advertising. Saves 10 Kg!
I will shift a subscription to a paper magazine or newspaper and read it online instead. Saves 30 Kg!

In my office or at my home computer:

I will print documents only when absolutely necessary. Saves 5 Kg!
I will proof documents on my computer screen rather than printing. Saves 5 Kg!
I will use electronic filing systems rather than paper. Saves 20 Kg!
I will print everything double-sided. Saves 5 Kg!
